What does an Enterprise Architect at Coolblue do?
As an Enterprise Architect Back Office, or as we like to call it: Back Office Engineering Boss, you are responsible for our software architecture and landscape of the Back Office area. Including strategic planning and execution. The Back Office area entails any software that is used by our employees or an (operational) process to support the day-to-day running of our business. This includes our purchasing, warehouse, delivery and installations, returns, finance, hr and energy contracts teams.

Based on our strategic business goals, you define the most suitable Back Office Engineering architecture. You will ensure that our 40+ Back Office Development teams use technology, programming languages, principles, blueprints and guidelines that enable scalability, increase speed of delivery or reduce maintenance costs. In addition, you are able to communicate clearly about this at various levels. From proposing to management about yearly goals or promising new technology, to evangelizing principles, blueprints and guidelines to our entire development population. This way you ensure these are successfully implemented in each of our 300+ daily software releases.
Furthermore, you initiate, organize and supervise implementation of new (strategic) software engineering technologies and projects like our own Delivery Hero app or a new Warehouse Management System. You utilize the knowledge of the full Development community and support bottom-up initiatives. And more importantly, you get these initiatives done. You challenge Principal Developers on their architectural choices and contribution to the Development teams and ensure that these align with your Engineering goals and the business needs.
As Enterprise Architect, you are part of the Software Engineering Board, which steers and decides upon domain overarching Software Engineering projects, like geographical expansion to Germany. In the board you represent Back Office Engineering, by creating proposals for new initiatives, reporting on the planning and performance of your area. You'll bring your expertise to the table on overarching topics.

- Initiate, organize and supervise implementation of strategic software engineering projects in order to get to your Engineering vision.
- Explore new technology, partnerships, languages or other opportunities to enable scalability, increase speed of delivery or reduce cost of maintenance.
- Advise and lead the way for our Principal Developers and Development teams as well as Product Owners, Domain Bosses, Head of Development Roadmaps and CEO.
- Challenge development roadmaps and guiding buy vs build decisions to ensure the right tool is used for the right job and we build software in an effective way.
- Hire Principal Developers based on your formation plan, allocate them to assignments, challenge them on their architectural choices and provide input for their yearly assessment.
You recognize yourself in the following
- A Master’s Degree.
- Several years of experience in Enterprise architecture.
- More than 10 years of work experience in Back Office Agile Software Development.
- Technical expertise and strong analytical skills. You have a clear vision of Back Office software architecture and the use of technology, languages, principles, blueprints and guidelines.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills to connect and lead the way for the Development community and management.
- Loads of autonomous drive and ownership, project management skills and problem solving skills to organize strategic projects and get them done.
- Autonomous drive to keep up within your field of expertise.
